Backpacking With The Rolex Submariner 124060

One of the most iconic watches ever produced, the Rolex Submariner. Over the decades the "tool watch" has slowly lost its way as being a tool watch. With the high dollar of all of these modern watches and ease of checking the time on your phone. The once so necessary need to have a tool watch has vanished rapidly. I am a big believer on wearing your watches no matter what it is. Having such a mass produced watch that I can realistically replace within minutes in the collection helped me take the watch into the mountains on a weekend backpacking trip.

The Rolex Submariner reference 124060 is the latest iteration of the 'No Date' sub. It has the latest 41mm steel case that is powered by the COSC-certified 3230. Fitted with a cerachrom bezel, made from scratch-resistant ceramic, is unidirectional and features a 60-minute graduated scale. I used the 60 minute bezel constantly on the trip. Most of the use came from timing my freeze dried food that I brought with us to 11,000 feet elevation. For the meals, you boil water and then add it to the bag and wait 10 minutes for the food to absorb all the water. I turned the bezel over to the minute hand to track the food so that I did not start eating to early.

One of the huge positives was how long the lume lasted on the dial and hands. The Chromalight is much better than I anticipated. When night time hit I did not always have my phone since there was no service but always had the watch on and could easily grab the time at a glance. Not being able to sleep to well throughout the night, the lume was somehow still lit vaguely throughout the entire night. Even at 3am it was lit barely and I could tell the time. I was too tired to take a photo of the lume at 3am, but you have probably seen enough lume shots of this watch.

Obviously this watch is technically a dive watch and I took it the opposite way above sea level but I also think that it is what it is made for. The watch got a few hairlines on the clasp from the 4 day excursion but that was about it. If you are scared of taking your beloved luxury watch outside of the office space then hopefully this helps you out. The watch will come back in one piece!
