Omega Speedmaster Professional Mark 4.5 Ref. 176.0012 Chronograph
The Omega Speedmaster Mark IV Professional ref. 176.0012 saw production from 1974 until 1986, at its launch serving as the latest evolution in the Mark series since its debut in the decade prior. While featuring a familiar color scheme and design accents as prior Speedmaster references, the Mark IV was decidedly funkier and function-driven, being positioned as a distinct tool watch for the everyday. The stainless steel case was chunkier and executed in a tonneau/barrel style, which was an aesthetic that was trending in 1970s watch design.
With its radial brushed tonneau-shaped case, the steel watch is charmingly large wearing on the wrist, recalling an aesthetic and style particularly popular through the 1970s. Function-focused, OMEGA moved the tachymeter scale from the outer bezel to inside the crystal, by the dial's outer track, to enhance the watch's overall durability underneath the transitional flat mineral glass commonly used by the brand in its tools watches from the era. Then, on the dial proper, a vertically configured chronograph pairs with a day-date complication, working together to present an attractive design that's well-equipped for the everyday.
Inside, the OMEGA caliber 1045 powers the watch, with the mechanism based upon a Lemania 1340 that's been most notably modified to display a 24-hour indicator. The automatic movement notably differs from the famous manually-wound movements, such as the caliber 861, which have traditionally supplied mechanical timekeeping in the Speedmaster range– this detail once more speaking to the practical focus in design of the distinct reference.
